Beacon AI Centers has selected Stantec to work on its AI data centre development programme in Alberta.
Stantec has been selected to provide architecture, building engineering, sustainability, transportation, civil, environmental, geomatics and project management for an AI data centre development programme from Beacon AI Centers, a pioneering data centre development company backed by Nadia Partners. The multiyear programme will span Alberta with six sites across five municipalities.
Leonard Castro, Stantec’s executive vice president for buildings, said: “With our 70-year history in the province, we are proud to play a critical role in helping position Alberta as a leading global hub for data-driven AI innovation. Our team will combine global expertise with regional knowledge to help Beacon realise their initial programme and meet the growing capacity demand.”
Each campus will span hundreds of acres and is projected to include multiple AI data centre buildings. The new facilities are expected to generate thousands of construction jobs and approximately 1,200 permanent jobs in Alberta. Design and permitting began in 2024 and construction will commence this year.
Josh Schertzer, CEO of Beacon AI Centers, said: “Beacon AI is redefining the data centre development industry to meet the growing demands of the AI era. By working with exceptional partners like Stantec, we can deliver ambitious projects quickly, at the scope and scale hyperscaler demand requires.”
Stantec’s integrated team works on projects ranging from cage deployments to full hyperscale data centre campuses. The company offers advanced design services featuring a range of cooling technologies tailored for data centres, including cooling solutions customised to local climate conditions and specific end-user requirements.
Beacon’s campuses will join the portfolio of mission critical facilities designed by Stantec, including a nationwide programme of hyperscale data centre campuses for a global technology client, many multi-tenant data centre campuses for regional and global operators, greenfield data centre campuses for leading cloud providers and the redevelopment and retrofit of legacy facilities.
