Securing an emergent and strategic water source for Kunming, Chinaās largest multi-ethnic city, home to 8.46 million people.
Kunming is one of the Chinese cities under the severest water shortage. Through integrated water utilisation, the Project improves the water quality of the Dianchi Lake, ensuring water supply to the city in case of emergency, and enhances the residential environment in the community.
The Project comprises three main parts, the Deze Reservoir with a capacity of 448 million mĀ³, the 90MW-capacity Ganhe Pump Station and a 115.34km-long water conveyance channel. There are also two supporting parts to the project. These are city emergency water supply facilities with a capacity of 900,000mĀ³/day, and a waterfall park in Kunming.
Academic Ma Hongqi of Chinese Academy of Engineering commented on the project, saying āGanhe Pump Station leapfrogged Chinese technology for high-lift large-capacity pumps, reaching a world-leading level.ā
Academic Mao Zhi said āthe project had theoretical significance and demonstration value.ā
Academic Zhang Zongliang opined that āthe Waterfall Park fully tapped the ecological value of water resources, and showcased ecological civilization.ā
To achieve this outcome, the Project received 20 invention patents, 51 utility model patents, and the Dayu Award and Luban Award – top honours for engineering quality in Chinaās water and construction industries.
