This tidal station has achieved continuous power generation and connection to the grid, making it the first in Asia to do so, and the third in the world.
With the successive deployment of the first and second phase platforms and operation of serial generation units, its has achieved almost five years of continuous grid-connection. This contrasts with the successive operation time of the world’s largest tidal array project (Meygen Array in Scotland) of less than 12 months at the time.
The 1.6MW turbine named Endeavour is the biggest tidal current energy unit in the world (surpassing the 1.5MW unit of Meygen Array project – which was previously the largest single unit in the world.
This turbine operates at high flow speed in sea areas with complex submarine topography, high silt content in seawater and microbe adhesion in the seabed. It also had to be designed with protections in place to avoid ocean debris damage and marine anti-corrosion technology for the assembly platform.
