A post-tensioned concrete trapezoidal box deck supported on reinforced concrete leaf piers and piled foundations.
Wiwilí Bridge is a strategic highway connection between the Central and Northern regions of Nicaragua. It provides reliable transportation infrastructure to more than 200,000 people.
The deck has two lanes for vehicles and two pedestrian ways, with a total width of 12.1m. Total length of the bridge is 312.5m, distributed in four spans of 50m, 75m, 125m and 62.5m long. Both the 125m main span and the adjacent spans were erected by the balanced cantilever method. Wiwili Bridge is the second longest bridge – and the one with the largest span – in Nicaragua.
Before the bridge, people had to cross the river in canoes. This was a dangerous crossing and fatalities were not uncommon in winter, and it has been designed with a seismic resistance strategy to ensure its resilience.
