This project is a large reservoir with the highest elevation in the world (4,300m above sea level) and is the largest water conservancy project in Tibet in terms of investment.
The total reservoir capacity is 296.5 million m3, and the maximum dam height is 61.5 m. The total length of the irrigation canal is 504 km, and the irrigation area is 30,260 hm2, where the annual grain supply is 51.2 million kg. The annual water supply is 150 million m3, the annual power generation is 100 million kw·h, and the soil erosion control area is 30,260 hm2. The farming, living, transportation, food and education conditions of the 67,000 poor Tibetans in Rikaze area have been improved through the project.
The project is located in the main Tibetan grain producing area at an altitude of 4,300m, but the
annual rainfall in this area is only 226mm, with low grain production, fragile ecological environment, poor natural conditions and low living standard. It’s the area with the largest number of poor people and the lowest per capita income in the Tibetan region. The project construction has improved the production conditions, living environment, education level, and transportation conditions of 67,000 poor people in this region.
The project can provide irrigation area of 30,260hm2 with an annual grain yield of 51.2 million kg. The annual water supply capacity is 150 million m3, with the guarantee rate of rural and industrial water supply increased to 95%. The soil erosion treatment area is 30,260 hm2, total treatment degree is 89.4%, and the forest and grass coverage rate is increased from 10% to 53.1%. The world's highest altitude fishway provides convenience for the migration and spawning of high-altitude fish, achieving ecological safety in the water area. During the construction period, 19,000 local workers were employed, increasing the income of local farmers and herdsmen exceeded US$56.46 million, and the per capita income increased by 21.3% after completion.
