The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Academic Building South, named Gaia, is built largely from Mass Engineered Timber (MET).
At 40,000 square metres GFA, it is the largest timber building in Asia. MET used in the project is from sustainably managed forests providing warmth and natural quality interiors and creating an environment conducive to learning. The building features abundant natural light and outward views making the learning space open and inspiring, and encouraging creativity and innovation.
The 6-storey superstructure utilises a combination of revolutionary engineered crosslaminated timber (CLT) and glue laminated timber (Glulam). As the construction adopts prefabrication and modular construction, the timber had to be manufactured according to precise specifications at manufacturing facilities in Europe. The use of MET resulted in a significantly cleaner, quieter, and safer construction site with minimal waste or large machinery required, resulting in very little disturbance to neighbouring buildings. It also achieved up to 35% in time savings at the project level and 35% in manpower savings on-site as it is prefabricated offsite.
Aurecon also harnessed innovation and technology by undertaking early, detailed, 3Ddigital documentation, and utilised BIM-Revit to create various floor plans and isometric views for easily visualisation for the client and help Please explain why you think this project should receive an award? facilitate discussions with the project team. For the end user, MET provides benefits in terms of design and liveability. Timber adds warmth and natural quality interiors, creating an environment conducive to learning and discourse. The use of MET is also highly sustainable as it provides superior noise control for airborne and impact sound transmission. It also provides a higher level of thermal performance, reducing heating and cooling costs of the building
