The Almaty-Khorgos road is a key section of the Western Europe–Western China international transit corridor.
The road was divided into eight construction lots, with the final two lots reconstructed as part of this project. The reconstruction involved upgrading the existing two-lane road to a first-category highway with four lanes and a cement concrete pavement.
In Lot 7 (km 214.3 – 304.3), the project included the construction of 26 bridges and overpasses, along with five traffic interchanges spanning a total length of 1,416 meters. In Lot 8 (km B 229.9), a new 700-meter bridge was built, and the existing bridge over the Ili River was reconstructed. This upgraded road serves as a vital link between the city of Almaty and the Special Economic Zone “Khorgos – Eastern Gate,” located on the border with China, enhancing regional connectivity and trade.
The Almaty-Khorgos road is a key segment of the international transit corridor "Western Europe – Western China," often regarded as a modern counterpart to the historic Silk Road. This project has played a crucial role in strengthening trade relations between China, Kazakhstan, and Eastern European countries. The reconstruction of the Almaty-Khorgos road has significantly reduced the delivery time of goods from China to Europe to just seven days, while also increasing the road’s capacity to accommodate up to 20,000 vehicles per day.
Beyond improving trade and logistics, the project has also provided employment opportunities for local road workers, enabling them to gain valuable experience in modern construction and reconstruction techniques. The use of advanced technologies and new materials, including durable concrete coatings, has enhanced the road's strength and longevity. Given its vital contribution to infrastructure and economic development in both the region and Kazakhstan as a whole, we believe this project is a strong candidate for the FIDIC Project Award.
