Ezhou Huahu Airport is Asia’s first international cargo hub airport and the fourth of its kind in the world. Dubbed the “Oriental Memphis,” it serves as a vital logistics gateway, providing nationwide coverage and linking China to global markets.
Equipped with two 3,600-metre runways, a 680,000-square-metre transfer centre, and comprehensive support facilities, the airport is designed to accommodate an annual cargo throughput of 3.3 million tonnes and one million passengers. Throughout its entire life cycle, the project has overcome numerous technical challenges related to scale, noise control, environmental protection, and digitalisation, embodying the principles of innovation, intelligence, sustainability, and eco-conscious design. Many of the technologies adopted are industry firsts, setting new benchmarks and standards for future developments.
This project stands out for its exceptional integration of scientific planning, innovation, and sustainability, making it a strong candidate for an award. From the outset, strategic and scientific planning was employed by thoroughly evaluating the surrounding environment, long-term and short-term development scales, and investment benefits. This led to an efficient land-use strategy and a full-time simulation-based layout featuring two runways and an "H"-shaped transfer centre, ensuring optimal operational flow. Prioritising operational efficiency, the design was refined multiple times, culminating in the industry’s first use of BIM digital modelling with LOD500 precision—enabling more detailed design and more cost-effective investment. The project also embraced a green and low-carbon philosophy, addressing noise pollution through innovative solutions and reducing taxi distances by optimising airside routes. Renewable energy sources, including geothermal and solar, have been extensively applied to minimise the airport's carbon footprint. Technological innovation lies at the heart of this development, with intelligent systems such as unmanned navigation supporting the creation of a truly smart airport. The project’s impressive achievements include over 60 domestic patents and software copyrights, more than 20 domestic and international awards, and the development of four new industry standards. Collectively, these advancements showcase the project’s pioneering approach and its significant contribution to the field of airport infrastructure.
