Design of new safe pedestrian and cycling networks for the highly motorised city of Kampala.
The transport system of Kampala city is largely supported by the city road network dedicated overwhelmingly to motorised traffic without adequate consideration for pedestrians and cyclists.
Population growth within the city has created pressure on the existing road network. This project aims at transforming selected road infrastructure corridors to create more inclusive, safe, secure and enjoyable movement of pedestrians and cyclists to and within the central business district.
This includes a 15km non-motorised corridor for pedestrians and cyclists along the Kampala–Namanve railway reserve, connecting to 4km of pedestrianised streets within the Kampala business district.
Motorized modes of transport account for around 23% of the energy related CO2 emissions in cities. The creation of a safe walking and cycling space therefore promote modal shift from motorised modes to active transport modes, especially for people that live and work in the vicinity of the network.
With trees, grass and other plants proposed for the route, the networks also has the potential to absorb pollutants, improve aesthetics, cool the air and contribute to the natural storm water management of the network.
