Memve’ele Hydroelectric Project is a diversion-type hydropower station with its open channel located on the Ntem River, South Region, Cameroon.
Known as the Three Gorges Project of Cameroon, the new power station consists of the dam, spillways, a water intake, a headrace channel, penstocks and a powerhouse.
Built for electricity generation and flood control, the hydropower project was completed in five years. With a reservoir volume of 130 million cubic meters, the project boasts a
capacity of 211 megawatts (MW), accounting for 20% of Cameroon’s total generation
capacity.
The project produces 1,187 gigawatt hours (GWh) of green energy per year, reducing CO2 emission by as much as one million tons. It has also boosted the capacity for flood
control, promoting socio-economic well-being for about 500,000 people in the local area.
