A flagship project to upgrade the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in order to maintain scientific progress and exploit the LHC’s full capacity.
The upgraded collider will be able to generate approximately ten times more particle collisions as before in support of new scientific breakthroughs. To do this it requires new technical infrastructure to house the equipment that will power the upgraded accelerator.
Equipment upgrades will be made at various Points around the accelerator ring, but the civil works are concentrated at Point 1 (ATLAS) in Meyrin, Switzerland and Point 5 (CMS) in Cessy, France. At both Points 1 and 5, new underground and surface structures have been built. These existing Points are being enlarged with five new industrial buildings, a new shaft, a new cavern and new galleries with a total length of about 500m.
