Lvzhijiang Bridge, called anengineering miracle on precipice, is the world’s first steel-box girder span suspension bridge with unilateral pylon, crossing Lvzhijiang Canyon with a main span of 780m.
The total bridge length is 813m and the overall project cost is $117.54 million. Abiding by ecological construction concept, the Project overcomes great challenges of constructing bridge on precipitous cliff, develops a maintenance-free composite cable saddle, achieves the engineering goal of no excavation of steep slopes, and proposes a set of technology for preventing rockfall impacts on bridge in difficult mountainous areas. The perfect integration of bridges and nature can be regarded as a model of world canyon bridge construction.
Lvzhijiang Bridge is based on the integration of environmental and functional requirements. The elegant and unique structure of the pioneering unilateral pylon suspension bridge achieves the perfect integration of engineering scheme and environment in a creative way. The completion and operation of the bridge have significantly improved the traffic conditions in that remote district, promoted the economic development of local minority areas, and became a regional landmark. The close cooperation among the client, designer and contractor during the working process ensured that all challenges were successfully resolved. The completion of the Bridge created a miracle of bridge engineering on the cliff, marking a significant progress in the construction technology of mountainous canyon bridges. The new type of maintenance free composite cable saddle, herringbone shaped stiffening beam, zero excavation construction method for high and steep slopes, and a set of rockfall prevention technology pioneered by the project demonstrate the unique engineering wisdom of the engineers, breaking through the engineering prohibition zone of building bridges on high cliffs in an ecological way, and maximizing the protection of the natural landscape and wildlife resources of the canyon, achieving a harmonious unity of man, bridges, and natural environment.
