In the Panama Metropolitan Area, wastewater was discharged directly into the Gulf of Panama at a rate of approximately 330,000 m3 / day (2005) due to the lack of sewage treatment facilities.
Consequently, serious water pollution and odor were occurring, as evidenced by Ministry of Health ordinance (2001) prohibiting the consumption of fish and shellfish caught in the surrounding area of the Gulf of Panama. These problems were deteriorating the citizen’s living environment, and the city’s value as an international marine transportation hub and service and tourism industry-based waterfront city. The project aims to improve the living and water environment through the construction of sewage treatment facilities with a capacity of 5.5 m3/s (total of Modules 1 and 2).
