The “Jurmala Water Management Development, Stage IV: Bražciems – Bulduri, Buļļuciems – Bulduri, Dzintari – Majori” project was designed to enhance the water supply and sewerage infrastructure in Jurmala City.
This initiative is part of a broader programme aimed at improving the environmental quality of Jurmala while providing residents with the opportunity to connect to a unified water supply and sewerage system. By doing so, the project enhances the quality of life for residents and helps reduce regional disparities.
The project, with a total cost of €11.8 million, was financed by the Cohesion Fund. It commenced in 2018 and was successfully completed in 2022, marking a significant step forward in sustainable urban development and environmental conservation for the region.
Despite Latvia's relatively small size, with a population of 1.9 million, this project stands out as a significant and ambitious endeavour. Its primary goal is to provide a reliable and stable water supply and sewage system for the 59,000 residents of Jurmala City, utilising modern and efficient technologies. The project involved the construction, modernisation, and improvement of water supply and sewerage networks across three key areas: Bražciems to Bulduri, Buļļuciems to Bulduri, and Dzintari to Majori.
By enhancing the reliability of the water and sewerage systems, the project significantly reduces the risk of infrastructure damage and contributes to improving the overall environmental quality in Jurmala. The city's unique natural and cultural-historical assets, such as the Gulf of Riga, the Lielupe River, Jurmala's lakes, and its 24.2 km stretch of white quartz sand beach, are better preserved through these improvements. Additionally, pine forests, historic wooden architecture, art history monuments, and specially protected natural areas further underline Jurmala’s distinctive advantages compared to other coastal cities in Latvia and the Baltic region.
This project's impact is evident not only in its technical achievements but also in its contribution to safeguarding Jurmala's environmental and cultural heritage. In recognition of its excellence, the project received second place in the "Engineering Construction" category of the Latvian Construction of the Year Award 2022, underscoring its significance and value as a model of sustainable infrastructure development.
