The transit line includes 9.8km of elevated sections, 13 stations and 5.9km of underground tunnels to preserve the landscape and avoiding traffic jams.
This project was the first tunnel project in Indonesia using tunnel boring machines for the construction of the tunnel sections, as well as bottom-up cut-and-cover methods for the construction of underground stations.
The project is the first such transit system in Indonesia, and the success of phase 1 has already seen phase 2 commissioned to build upon its impact on the economy, pollution reduction and quality transportation in congested Jakarta.
The new connection reduces time between central Jakarta and south Jakarta by train to just 28 minutes, compared to two hours by car during heavy traffic periods. Each MRT station is connected with a bus route. Meanwhile, a train station square has been developed for easy transfer between trains and buses at each station.
