Complex light rail project with many technical challenges will enhance Bergen’s urban environment and deliver sustainable transportation.

Bergen Municipality has awarded Norconsult a contract for the planning and zoning the Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen) from the city centre to Sandviken. The project will commence shortly and encompasses all disciplines required to deliver a zoning plan by June 2026.

Bybanen is an integral component of Bergen’s urban landscape, serving as the main artery of the city’s public transport system. Its development is aimed at enhancing the urban environment and providing a safe, efficient and sustainable mode of transportation.

Norconsult’s assignment includes the technical feasibility study and zoning plan for Bybanen from the city centre to Sandviken. Additionally, a technical preliminary project and regulatory plan for the main cycle solution on the same route will be developed. These plans are part of the regulatory plan for Bybanen to Åsane (phase 5).

Vegard Jacobsen, executive vice president, Norway regions at Norconsult, said: “We are very pleased that Bergen Municipality has selected Norconsult to develop the new zoning plan for the stretch from the city centre to Sandviken. With our solid expertise in key areas such as rail technology, road and traffic solutions, urban planning, and structural engineering, we are confident that Bergen Municipality will receive a plan that facilitates the realisation of Bybanen to Åsane as a safe, efficient, and sustainable means of transport.”

The project is complex with many planning challenges, numerous interfaces and technical difficulties. All this requires specialised expertise and Norconsult has put together an experienced team with extensive experience from previous Bybanen projects for Bergen Municipality.
The estimated value of the contract is NOK 60 million.
