This year’s International Women in Engineering Day on Monday 23 June 2025 is an opportunity to highlight gender diversity and inclusion in an industry that makes a massive difference to people’s lives.
Once again, this year, International Women in Engineering Day celebrates the amazing work that women engineers around the world are doing. The day profiles the best, brightest and bravest women in engineering, who are working together to create a better world.
This year’s theme, #TogetherWeEngineer, highlights the power of collaboration and unity in driving innovation and inclusivity in the field. Across the world, companies and organisations will highlight the key role that women are playing in the engineering industry with a key focus on the need to attract more women and girls into the sector.
Commenting on the day and the multifaceted aspects of a career in engineering, Portuguese engineer Dr Carla Pinto, coordinating (associate) professor at the Polytechnic of Porto, said: “On 23 June we are celebrating the 12th International Women in Engineering Day and I am thrilled that I chose, and never gave up on, being an engineer, working in academia and training future engineers. While an engineering career is rewarding, especially in academia, sometimes it can be intimidating to be the only woman in the room. Regardless, I like every single day, divided in teaching, research, evaluation, being challenging and keeping me going.
“I really think that now is the time for everyone working in tech to build and raise more female role models who can open the way for young girls to follow in their footsteps. My message to young girls is to be bold, and not afraid to fail! Failure is not wrong, actually it is an indicator that each one of us is learning valuable lessons in our careers. At the end of the day, our passion for what we do in life, in our career, is the one motivation we need to get out of bed in the morning.”
Initiatives like International Women in Engineering Day are important in celebrating the significant contributions women make in our industry, especially given the fact that they are a small minority, as they still thrive and produce amazing work. More women are needed in engineering and construction because the industry is essential in securing health, safety and economic prosperity around the world. In order to do this effectively, it’s clear that the industry must actively engage the best minds and ensure that it promotes a diverse cohort of different views and ways of thinking, to get women joining and staying in the industry – and leading it as well.
