Arup is to support the Nordic Council of Ministers in showcasing Nordic solutions and best practice on climate-resilient cities, buildings and urban systems.
The Nordic Council of Ministers has initiated a project to spur Nordic non-party stakeholder engagement in dialogues and events under the Sharm el-Sheikh mitigation ambition and implementation work programme (MWP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The project seeks to showcase Nordic solutions and best practice on climate-resilient cities, buildings and urban systems. For that, the Nordic Council of Ministers has appointed Arup to collaborate with private sector, government officials, and knowledge institutions across the Nordics to develop a unified approach to mitigate climate impacts in cities, which will be unveiled on the road to COP29.
To enhance collaboration, Arup has established a shared platform on LinkedIn and is inviting Nordic private sector, government officials and knowledge institutions to join the process of creating a Nordic catalog of scalable climate mitigation solutions and policy briefs. The recommended solutions and policy briefs will be communicated at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
In a declaration leading up to the UNFCCC COP28, the Nordic Ministers to the Environment and Climate said: “We in the Nordic region are committed to demonstrate that there are mitigation and adaptation options available in all sectors that can be applied and scaled up globally. We expect all countries that have the tools, know-how and institutional and financial capacity to step up and lead by example, including in the build-up of such capacities in developing countries.”
Peter Vangsbo, who leads Arup’s sustainability and climate services team in Denmark, said: “We are honoured to collaborate with the Nordic Council of Ministers. Through our extensive global experience in climate-resilient cities and green urban infrastructure, we will advise the council on preparing a policy brief that showcases the transformative potential of Nordic solutions globally.”
