Improvements and upgrades of the Fifth Ring Road and the surrounding motorways and primary roads in order to accommodate projected increase in the population and vehicular traffic.
This project was undertaken to ensure compliance with the National Transport Policy, to improve the safety of road users, to support a sustainable environment and the health of road users and residents, and to improve accessibility to newly developed areas.
While executing the design and construction of the road and road structure works, the protection and relocation work for service utilities, such as crossing oil pipes, electricity cables, freshwater culverts, etc., became significant challenges.
Amongst others, coordination with relevant authorities/ministries and obtaining their confirmations/approvals were complex. The Consultant exercised a cross-cultural/environmental understanding with the clients for more than a decade, while in full compliance with the local laws and regulations.
The design of the road and structural works is in principle in accordance with the Kuwait Standards, including Kuwait Motorway Standards based on the AASHTO Standards, while the Consultant also referred to other standards to fit the site conditions as appropriate.
Upon completion of the Project, the environmental impacts of the Fifth Ring Road were significantly decreased, in particular with regard to noise and vibration by vehicle traffic. This was brought about largely from the improvement/upgrade of the road right-of-way (ROW) and intersections without traffic signals.
