Shanghai Metro Line 11 project has a total length of 141.7km, which is equivalent to the straight-line distance from Zurich to Strasbourg.
Constructed and operated in stages, creating the longest single-line subway operating mileage in the world, the line is a product of modern technological innovation and a model concept of green environmental protection.
It is also the first line to involve the cross-administrative regional management of a subway in China. Commuters from Jiangsu Huaqiao can reach Shanghai’s downtown area in 39 minutes, promoting regional interconnection and benefitting tens of millions of people along the line.
“High-quality, innovation, environmental protection and transparency” was at the heart of the project. The project team worked with Shanghai Jiaotong University and Tongji University, connecting Shanghai West Railway Station and Longyang Maglev, allowing for the orderly evacuation of over 200,000 sudden passenger flows from the F1 circuit, Shanghai Stadium and Disneyland within 30 minutes of each other. It thus creates largest, green, and cordial passenger traffic flow that runs through the heart of the megacity.
The programme developed a tunnel boring machine with minimal ground disturbance and environmental protection technology, passing through the ancient masonry tower with a
thousand-year-old brick and wooden pagoda close by, Xujiahui Catholic Church – the
first cathedral in the Far East.
The cumulative ground subsidence is less than 2.8mm and the tunnel passes by 106 protected buildings located within the historical and cultural regions of Yuyuan Road. The cumulative settlement of the houses is less than 3.1mm and the daily lives of the surrounding residents were not affected.
In Xujiahui, which is comparable to Times Square in New York, it is the first time such an existing underground space has been formed to build a metro station and a complete set of reverse-adding technologies, to achieve zero impact on the ground surface traffic and
underground pipelines of the central city during the construction of the Xujiahui Rail Transit Hub.
