Shanghai Chongming Ecological Avenue is the primary transit hub of Chongming Island, exemplifying a green transportation corridor for densely populated estuary islands.
Stretching 38 km east to west across the 1200 km² island, the avenue traverses 32 natural rivers and links 58 villages. It serves 600,000 residents and welcomes 7 million tourists annually, promoting Chongming Island’s economic and social development through sustainable transportation. This avenue stands as a model for ecological island development, fostering harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
The values of "transparency, integrity, and honesty" are upheld throughout the project's construction, with oversight from both the public and the government. Emphasizing "innovation, high quality, and technical excellence," the project introduced Chongming Island's first green highway, established standards for green-highway planning, design, and construction, and earned five Chinese national patents. The project team has completed 11 innovative research projects and developed the first version of the Shanghai Green-Road Design Standards.
This project epitomizes the principles of "green, low-carbon, and sustainable" development. By designing the road to align with the local terrain, 70,900 square meters of land were preserved. The use of local materials saved 700,000 cubic meters of outbound earthwork, conserving the limited sand resources of the Yangtze River. The project also incorporated native tree species and aesthetically enhanced bridges, maintaining the island's landscape, ecology, and cultural diversity.
The highway has significantly improved transportation for 600,000 island residents, reducing travel time from 3 hours to 1 hour. Additionally, it has led to a reduction in energy consumption by 1.5 million tons of coal annually, as 3 million people opt for green modes of transportation. This project's holistic approach to sustainability, innovation, and community impact makes it a deserving candidate for an award.
