Spanning 7.8 miles with a signature, 3,300-foot Mississippi River bridge.
INNOVATIVE & SUSTAINABLE: The new structures were created with an industry changing steel alloy developed by the design team, which will benefit engineering for decades to come. These innovative and sustainable measures were incorporated to achieve a 100- year service life and minimize impacts to the surrounding environment.
TRANSPARANT & IMPACTFUL: The project team performed this project with forthright methods, bridging integrous and quality management methods to develop a community changing, critical infrastructure that improves mobility, safety and quality of life
This project exemplifies the core values and criteria of the FIDIC Project Award 2023. This interstate is important for the economic vitality of the Quad Cities (Iowa: Bettendorf, Davenport, and Illinois: Rock Island, Moline) and links the states with basket-handle, true arch signature bridges over the Mississippi River. For decades, this area has experienced growth resulting in increased traffic volumes, traffic incidents and numerous maintenance activities on an infrastructure that was functionally obsolete and under capacity. The I-74 corridor reconstruction project aimed to increase capacity, mobility and safety through corridor and structural improvements, as well as provide an environmentally friendly, aesthetically pleasing Quad Cities connection. The design team managed the process and facilitated robust engagement throughout the project, which strengthened the public perception of it as a community-influenced, technically Please explain why you think this project should receive an award? innovative corridor reconstruction. As the crown jewel of the I-74 project, the first-if-its-kind twinspan, basket-handle, through-arch structure involved innovative design techniques that influence both nature preservation and structural tenacity. The bridge aesthetic and functional facilities connect the public to nature as well. The overall corridor project is a true success story of innovation and communication on a large scale, creating a key transportation link while protecting and enhancing the surrounding environment.
