Longest desert railway in the world to cross a shifting sand desert area.
Located at the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, the world’s second-largest shifting sand desert, the Hotan-Ruoqiang Railway, together with operated Golmud – Korla Railway and Southern Xinjiang Railway, form the world’s first desert rail loop line.
Hotan-Ruoqiang Railway is 825 km long in total, with a design speed of 120 km/h and 22 stations; a section of 534 km is in the sandstorm region, making it the longest desert railway in the world to cross a shifting sand desert area. In order to overcome the worldwide problem of sand management with an "arid climate and high wind speed", the concept of "sand control first" was proposed, creating six firsts in the history of Chinese railway construction and setting a new milestone in global desert railway construction.
