An investment of more than $200m into a plant spanning 1.5 million square meters with a phased construction to allow production to begin before construction was finished.
This was BMW first automotive factory in South America, creating 1,300 direct jobs and over 2,500 indirect roles in the area. During construction, 850 people from 90 companies worked on this project, including 70 companies of the local area.
The project achieved ISO 14.001 certification to assure that good environment and sustainability requirements are followed by the company and the factory. It was also delivered with Lean Construction Methodology, requiring integration and alignment among all involved – client, project management, contractor and designer.
Given Brazil’s lack of market maturity for contractors capable of adhering to lean methodologies, this project was a big challenge for which cultural changes and innovation was needed among many participants.
