A $50M electrical and civil infrastructure upgrade, a necessary foundation for future campus development at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).
BCIT’s aging electrical infrastructure at the north end of the Burnaby campus was at the end of its serviceable life and at critical risk of failure.
Sustainability was the centre throughout all phases of the project and acted as a driver in all decisions. The team set out to achieve the necessary operational and economic objectives while at the same time having a positive environmental impact on the environmentally sensitive areas on campus and adjacent areas.
To do this, a framework was created that measured sustainability and resilience indicators spanning quality of life, leadership, resource allocation, the natural world, climate change and resilience.
As a result, the BCIT NCIP was awarded the Envision Gold award for sustainable infrastructure by the ISI, making it the first educational institution in Canada to earn an Envision Award at any level.
Key elements for that included its implementation of efficient lighting and transformer technology and its innovative stormwater infrastructure that included integration of rainwater gardens.
