President accused of misconduct has been removed from office following a vote of the board.

The Board of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), following the unanimous recommendation by the board of executive directors, resolved that Mr. Mauricio Claver-Carone would cease to hold the office of President of the Bank.

In accordance with the bank’s Charter, the executive vice president, Reina Irene Mejía Chacón, will act as president under the direction of the Board of executive directors until a new president is elected.

An election will be conducted in due course and the IDB has been keen to emphasise that its teams continue to operate normally.

The vote by 14 directors followed an ethics inquiry into the now former president’s activities relating to a subordinate member of staff.
