Delhi Metro set to transform transit with BIM

Following its expansion, Delhi Metro will become one of the largest systems in the world. Using BIM will help to transform the operations of the new metro line.

How do you design a safe, reliable system that can transport millions of people, both now and decades in the future? The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has found its answer in BIM.

This innovative approach will be one of many success stories discussed at the Autodesk Rail Summit 2024 on 13-14 November 2024 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The summit provides a key opportunity to connect with industry experts and explore the future of rail.

The exponential population growth of Delhi is undeniable, recently reaching more than 32 million people. Rail is a vital component for the city to reduce traffic congestion and provide millions of citizens with safe, reliable transportation.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) is a mass, rapid-transit system serving millions of riders in Delhi and the surrounding region. With BIM, the organisation can now achieve goals for growing transportation demands, easily collaborate with stakeholders and overcome the challenges of building an expansion of the system in a major population centre. Dr Vikas Kumar, managing director of DMRC, said: “We have completed our phase one, two and three well ahead of schedule despite being in such a difficult urban landscape.”

Once the expansion is complete, Delhi Metro is poised to become one of the largest systems in the world. Using BIM will also help with the eventual operations of the new metro line.

Samim Sekh, deputy chief architect at DMRC, commented: “If we’re revamping down the line in maybe 30, 40, 50 or 100 years, we know what exactly we built and what we have to build on. Preparation of a BIM model or a digital twin now is very essential for any of the projects.”

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s success story is just one example of how digital transformation can revolutionise rail systems. Delegates will be able to dive deeper into similar stories and connect with a community of thought leaders at the Autodesk Rail Summit 2024 on 13-14 November 2024 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The summit includes two days of insightful keynotes, panel discussions and interactive presentations that will shape the future of the rail industry.
