Morava Corridor road project will be Serbia’s first digital motorway, featuring smart-traffic systems supported by up to 1,000km of fibre optic cable.

Bechtel and joint venture partner ENKA marked a major milestone on Serbia’s Morava Corridor Motorway on 12 January 2026 with the opening of Section 6 of the project.

The project, one of Serbia’s largest infrastructure investments, has now opened 71 kilometres of roadway, with the new stretch connecting the industrious Kraljevo municipality with the spa town of Vrnjačka Banja and surrounding destinations, improving mobility and expanding opportunities for tens of thousands.

The opening ceremony included Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić, senior officials, project partners and local community leaders.

“Each new kilometre of the Morava Corridor strengthens Serbia’s trade corridors and links more communities to opportunity,” said Mark Allison, Bechtel’s general manager for heavy civil. “Bechtel is proud to be creating jobs, building skills and delivering the flood-defence infrastructure that will support the region for decades,” Allison said.

Stretching more than 112 kilometres, the Morava Corridor Motorway will transform central Serbia by linking key regions to pan-European corridors X and XI, improving transport efficiency and safety and supporting long-term economic growth along the West Morava River valley, a region long affected by flooding and limited access.

The project also delivers extensive river-regulation and flood-defence works to protect the motorway and nearby communities. About 36km of river regulation and 26km of dikes, including high embankments, scour protection, river diversions and new riverbeds, will provide long-term resilience for the region.

When complete, the Morava Corridor will be Serbia’s first digital motorway, featuring smart-traffic systems supported by up to 1,000km of fibre optic cable. The corridor will include 79 bridges and 13 interchanges, enabling real-time speed limits, enhanced instant safety alerts and a more seamless travel experience for drivers.
