A corridor connecting Wuhan’s two districts, Hankou and Wuchang, one known as Oriental Chicago and the other famous for science, education and culture.
The tunnel has a total length of 4,660m and an outer diameter of 15.2m. The one-way three-lane highway tunnel and the metro tunnel are perfectly integrated in the same tube tunnel, with two metro stations on both ends – the first of its type in tunnel construction.
The new corridor greatly mitigates the pressure on Wuhan’s river-crossing traffic and promotes the development of Wuhan along the main axis of the Yangtze River.
The two-way metro tunnel was built under the two-way six-lane highway with a width of only 40m, saving approximately 120,000m2 of land, reducing minimising the impact on
the environment and residents and reducing project cost.
The environmental impact and evaluation report were released on the internet to fully solicit the opinions of adjacent residents and collect suggestions. Six large construction enterprises participated in the project construction through open bidding and the
project was completed with zero accidents and was a finalist of ITA Tunnelling Award for Major Projects of the Year 2019.
All materials required for shield tunnelling were environmentally-friendly or consisted of special ingredients to ensure zero pollution to the Yangtze River water body. The project
used an efficient slurry treatment system to recycle approximately 200,000m3 of slurry.
