The UAE Wind Program, a government-funded initiative supported by the Crown Prince Court and developed by Masdar, represents a significant milestone in the country’s renewable energy journey.
The project comprises 23 Goldwind wind turbines within a 14 MWp wind zone, delivering a total installed capacity of 117.5 MW. The EPC contract includes the full scope of design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and trial operation. The wind farm is scheduled for completion within 18 months, while the associated solar power plant has a 16-month timeline. This project marks a new era in integrating utility-scale wind power into the UAE’s energy mix, complementing the energy already supplied to the national grid by the country’s flagship solar, nuclear, and waste-to-energy plants.
The UAE Wind Program has delivered strong and lasting social, environmental, and professional benefits, reflecting innovation, quality, and a deep commitment to sustainability and community development.
Throughout the project’s construction, the team actively engaged with the local community, notably participating in Ramadan charity initiatives led by the local government. Individual employee donations totalled nearly AED 13,000, highlighting a culture of social responsibility. Beyond charitable contributions, the project created over 1,000 local jobs and provided hands-on training to a large number of skilled foreign engineers. These efforts supported local economic development and talent cultivation, fostering long-term capacity building. By bringing together professionals from diverse backgrounds, the project also contributed to China-Arab cultural exchange, strengthening mutual understanding and generating a meaningful positive social impact.
As the UAE’s first utility-scale wind power project, this initiative plays a critical role in advancing the country’s 2050 net-zero emissions strategy. It represents a major step in diversifying the national energy mix and transitioning toward cleaner, more sustainable sources. Its significance extends beyond national borders, offering a replicable model for other countries aiming to accelerate carbon reduction and energy transition. The project has earned wide industry recognition, including the "Big Project Award 2022" at the Middle East Big Project Awards, and was shortlisted for the 2023 Excellence in Digital Planning and Design Implementation Project, affirming its innovative and forward-thinking approach.
The project set a benchmark for safety management, completing its entire construction phase with zero accidents. This outstanding achievement earned it an International Safety Award in 2022, demonstrating exemplary leadership in health and safety performance. The project’s engineering scope—covering design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and trial operation—was delivered with high-quality standards, transparency, and integrity, supported by a multi-national, multi-disciplinary team.
In summary, the UAE Wind Program is not only a technical achievement but a model of professional excellence, environmental stewardship, and social value. It enhances the quality of life for local communities, provides long-term economic and environmental benefits, and stands as a symbol of successful international collaboration in pursuit of sustainable development.
