Extending the Karowe diamond mine life to at least 2040, with underground carat production forecast to contribute approximately $4bn.
This vital project to the local economy will see the sinking of a new main shaft for the diamond mine, and the upgrade of energy supply for the site.
New power capabilities are required for the sinking and operating of the main shaft. As a result, the site has seen a new power-line and associated substations designed to connect from the existing transmission line to the plant with a 29 km-long, 132 kV powerline constructed between the substation and the project site.
Additionally, the substation located within the premises of the mine will be expanded to include a 132 / 11 kV switchyard, where power will then be distributed around the project site.
High value miningÂ
The mine opened in 2012 and is the only mine ever to yield two 1,000+ carat diamonds. However, the open pit mining operation on the site will conclude in 2026.
That makes the sinking of a shaft mine crucial to the future of the site, with a 767 meter deep, 8.5 meter diameter shaft with two 21- tonne skips for production hoisting and a service cage for man and material movement through the mine.
