The first in the world VVER-1200 generation 3+ reactor, able to remain safe in a coolant loss situation.
Safety is one of the priorities of the Novovoronezh NPP-2 VVER.1200 generation 3+ Power Unit project. It fully complies with defense-in-depth criteria while applying redundancy, diversity, physical and territorial distribution principles within safety systems, which makes it resistant to both external and internal impact.
The facility has internal safety capacity to avoid the need for emergency response from off site. It has two-channel safety system with redundancy in its active components, as well as a channel of passive systems comprised of low-pressure hydro accumulators and an innovative passive heat removal system, providing power unit autonomy and allowing it to withstand an event of loss-of-coolant accident coinciding with Blackout for no less than 24 hours.
Compared to VVER-1000, Novovoronezh NPP-2 VVER-1200 generation 3+ Power Unit has 20% greater capacity. Modified reactor and fuel assemblies of VVER-1200, with shorter upper and lower end fittings, allow for the 18% increase in fuel load and provide for deeper fuel burnout. Due to the wide atomisation of processes and centralization of functions it requires 30-40% less personnel to operate.
