Located just 5 km north of Colombo’s city center, this project comprised two distinct packages of advanced bridge construction.
Package 1 featured the construction of 23 multi-span continuous steel box girder bridges, collectively spanning 922 meters. These structures were supported by an intricate framework of 16 steel portal frame piers, one reversed L-shaped steel pier, 24 reinforced concrete piers, and four reinforced concrete reversed T-shaped abutments.
Package 2 introduced the construction of a 180-meter-long, 3-span extra-dosed bridge, renowned for its aesthetic and functional benefits. Approaching the extra-dosed bridge, the construction included both 4-span and 5-span continuous reinforced concrete rigid frame box girder bridges. On the opposite side, a 6-span continuous reinforced concrete rigid frame box girder bridge was erected. The bridges in Package 2 relied on 18 reinforced concrete piers and a reversed T-shaped reinforced concrete abutment for support. This project highlights a significant advancement in bridge engineering and design, contributing substantially to the infrastructure development in the region.
The successful completion of this project involved a collaborative effort by personnel and labour from various countries. For instance, planning and design were carried out by a
Japanese Consultant, assisted by Sri Lankan engineers and technical staff. Japanese expatriates were responsible for transferring technical skills to Sri Lankan engineers and technicians, in order to enhance technical capacity. Construction was undertaken by Japanese Contractors, assisted by Sri Lankan subcontractors. Workers on the project hailed from various countries, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, China, Taiwan, etc. The fabrication of steel bridge components was executed at factories in Japan, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. Therefore, this project was greatly beneficial for having provided livelihoods and opportunities for technical skill development for people from various countries.
Furthermore, this project will enhance the socioeconomic development of Colombo and the Western Province of Sri Lanka, by meeting the ever-increasing traffic volume demands. This is in consideration of forecasted projects in the area, such as the Colombo Harbour Development and the Port City projects. In addition to those benefits, the project has heightened the general aesthetic of the project area and provides Sri Lanka with an important landmark, which is a source of national pride and celebration.
