This Laos-China railway runs from the southwest of China to the north of Laos, to become part of the Trans-Asian Railway Passage.
This 1,035km railway runs through regions with complex geology, high seismic risk, high geo-stress and high geothermal energy. It passes through 218 faults and fractures, Ailao Mountains, the Mekong River, and other high mountains and deep valleys, with a maximum relative altitude difference of 2,900m.
Structurally, it includes 316 bridges, 176 tunnels and 59 stations. After five months of operation, this railway has delivered 2.7 million passengers and 2.9 million tons of goods in total, proving a significant driver of economic and social development along the route.
Laos has had extremely limited rail investment in the past, with its difficult terrain making it hard to build and operate extensive railways. So this line is the country’s first high-standard railway corridor in the north of Laos.
As a result, the project established the Laos railway technical standard system and innovated many major construction techniques for works that included the Yuanjiang River Super Major Bridge that has a high-pier and large-span, friendship tunnel with full face high-content halite strata, and high-filled subgrade in thick soft soil section.
Great importance was attached to environmental protection during project construction. The railway route bypasses 23 national natural reserves such as Xishuangbanna and Luang Prabang, five tourist attractions, three national forest parks and the main habitat of Asian elephants. So the project was designed to harmonise with the environment along the route.
