The Kpone Landfill spans 16 hectares and consists of four cells, each measuring 175 metres by 145 metres.
Originally constructed and opened in January 2013, it was designed to receive 500 tonnes per day (tpd) of municipal solid waste (MSW) from the Tema Metropolis and surrounding areas. However, due to a shortage of disposal facilities in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area, the landfill received 1,000 tpd of MSW.
Zoomlion Ghana Limited was contracted to decommission the site, a task completed in 2013 as part of the IDA-funded Second Urban Environmental Sanitation Project (UESP2). The current contract, which began on 1 June 2020, has a duration of 18 months.
This project deserves an award because the Kpone Landfill Decommissioning and Re-engineering Project is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming a former waste site into a green zone for leisure activities. The project involves the closure and restoration of the landfill, including the installation of a landfill gas collection system and the planting of trees and vegetation to rehabilitate the area.
The Kpone project stands out for its potential to deliver a long-term solution to the environmental and public health challenges associated with landfills. It is the first of its kind in West Africa, with an innovative closure method that is also unique across the African continent. By addressing pressing environmental concerns and turning a former waste site into a community asset, this project sets a new standard for landfill management and sustainability in the region.
