A huge international aviation hub, form the “multi-airport system” in Chengdu together with Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport.
Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, located in the southeast of Chengdu City, is the largest international aviation hub in the west of China and a super hub airport with rail links.
To accommodate 50 million annual passenger throughput, the airport has been designed to include three runways and a passenger terminal building of 710,000 square meters.
The resulting airport is an open air passage linking to the world, radiating and serving a population about 75 million, becoming a pivot and driving force for promoting the development of the western region and the growth of the Chengdu-Chongqing economy.
The airport set out to optimise the runway configuration by moving the site 3km north, closer to Chengdu, and more suitable for east-oriented flight routes because this reduces the noise impact on over 4,000 households with about 15,000 residents in five surrounding towns. As a result, each aircraft saves 3 minutes to take off.
New technologies deployed in this project include intelligent runway technology; 3D technological bird repelling system; and the first automatic pick-up boarding bridge in Asia. It involved 23 patents, 10 software copyrights, two new industrial standards, two new books, and 96 papers published.
The modern technology means that the number of manual inspections needed at the airport has been reduced, and the resulting cost reduction amounts to 5m RMB.
